I love pieces exploring controversial topics, regardless of the opinions expressed (as long as it's done artfully). I can't argue with a stranger's experience because it isn't MY experience, so I hardly feel threatened by simply being exposed to it.

In short, I enjoyed watching this.

The animation style was appropriate for the topic and adds to the ambiance, which this animation is laden with. The drawings of the characters themselves may have benefited from increased realism to drive home how grim the tone was, but the careful use of 3D and textures helped offset this. The music was a solid choice as well.

As a side note, have you seen the Backwater Gospel? If not, search it on YouTube as I think you'll enjoy it. I have a feeling you may have seen it since your preacher bears a striking resemblance to the preacher in this video. I'm assuming it's simply coincidence and am making no judgement! I simply wanted to point it out.

Thanks again for sharing! :D

I have seen Backwater! It's one of my absolute favorites! I enjoyed their art style and did mimic it some, but my preacher had a ton of influence from Henry Kane from Poltergeist and Mitt Romney / Ronald Reagan.=P Great pick up though=)
If you haven't, check out Jesus Camp, it's a documentary from 2006. It's one of the most disturbing things I've ever watched and one of the most brilliant parts about it is that it wasn't filmed in an "axe to grind" manner, which made it all the more eerie and disturbing.
Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed it.

10 More Babies, Pow pow pow pow!

I'm gonna be singing this at work all day tomorrow, I just know it.

Still Awesome

I remember seeing this movie at the EMP in Seattle during my first year at the Art Institute. It was, by far, the best of the entire set. My friends and I laughed about it for DAYS. I still think I should have gone into the animation program rather than the stupid graphic design program!

DHaynes responds:

Ha ha that's an awesome compliment, thanks. The animation program was pretty shitty too, funny thing is I made this before I even came to that school.

Eh, Nothing Very Original

Points for assembling a more or less smooth animation with no bugs. However, since this is a sprite animation, the difficulty in doing so is relatively low.

I didn't find the text to be very entertaining, personally. I found most of it to be a bit juvenile and irrelevant, actually. Most of it plays off of hating Pikachu, weak slapstick, and Japanese stereotypes typical of young anime fans.

It's fine to be a young anime fan; I'm not bashing the anime. I'm simply not young enough to enjoy these antics.

Hell Yes!

I enjoy your animations a great deal simply for the quality and quirkiness of them.

And for the fact that you make no apologies. ;)

I actually enjoyed the monks best. Dunno why; they look like a mindless group of sheep. I guess that's why I like that they look it. Haha!

Looking forward to episode two (or episode 1.75 if you get distracted).

Jazza responds:

lol or episode 1.634
it's coming i SWEAR. lol.

anyhow gld you liked it. i too love the monks. they remind me of muppets.

Doesn't Make Sense

I have no idea what was going on for most of it. What little I did get seemed too similar to the animator vs animation movies. The buttons were confusing to boot.

3 for effort and random weirdness. Keep working at it.

Ehh...

I do get the idea of looping and endless string of "Magicarp, splash attack!" However, the repetition does really, really wear out the joke. You could have come up with a few good phrases and actually ended the thing properly.

Funny idea, though. Bit of a miss, in my opinion, however.

Sirschmoopy responds:

You don't understand the joke to begin with if you think it "wears it out".

Excellent!

I loved this!

The sound quality is very impressive, and the soundtrack compliments the material wonderfully. The animation was smooth, you did a good job working with perspective, and the scenario was cute and entertaining.

Great job. :)

Another Excellent Installment

For some reason I was experiencing bad audio lag on this one, but I have a feeling it was just me so I didn't include that in the rating.

As always, a very entertaining episode! You're doing a very solid job at integrating sprite animations from different games coherently, and the action certainly doesn't disappoint. The animations become more and more polished as the series continues, so I'm very enthusiastic about the next one!

I really only have one small gripe. You do a spectacular job at improvising in situations such as the yellow axem ranger's being split in half. His insides remain true to the visual style of the animation, which adds a great deal! Could you bring that aspect into your environment when it's affected? For instance, the mountain being split in half reveals a radial gradient instead of a pixelated interior. It's somewhat distracting, and while I haven't a clue how difficult it would be to accomplish I only mention it because I have great faith in your ability.

Again, fantastic job. Thanks for keeping at it.

Waste of potential

I have enjoyed a couple of your other animations, which is why this one is disappointing. I feel you can do much better than this!

The storyline was nearly non-existent; no additional information is really given. It leads the viewer to believe that the minuscule storyline is simply a platform to allow for battles. However, the battles are very vanilla and predictable, the animation gets a bit choppy in spots, and it's sometimes hard to pick out the details of what is going on.

The sword also is a bit strange. It changes shape and size depending on the scene. A thin sword is fine; just as long as it's consistent.

The style is dreadfully overdone. You are better than most artists, which is why I'm disappointed in this one. Continue to develop your personal style and try to avoid projects like this. I can understand if you sometimes have to get it out of your system before you can move on, however I hope it doesn't become a pattern.
